Ready for a story? Let us tell you about the Isle of Mull Cheddar! (Featured in our most recent Cheese of the Month Club box) 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿⁠

Just off the west coast of Scotland in the Inner Hebrides islands, lies a little isle called Mull. Mull is home to 2,800 residents and a whisky distillery. Throughout its history, Mull has played host to Viking invaders, Irish explorers, and was the setting of ‘Kidnapped’ by Robert Louis⁠
Stevenson. ⁠

While the island is well-known around Scotland and among scotch whisky fans for being home to Tobermory distillery, it’s a little less known for our other favourite producer from the island - Sgriob-ruadh, or Isle of Mull Creamery. Don’t worry, we can’t pronounce the Gaelic name either!⁠

Brendan Reade, the cheesemaker at Sgriob-ruadh, strongly believes in fresh, raw milk as the answer to the renaissance of artisan cheesemaking.⁠

The cows on Mull are milked in the morning and the milk is immediately transferred to the cheesemaking facilities. No stopping for lunch or pasteurization along the way! This cheddar is made by a small team of dairy farmers and happy cows. ⁠

Why are the cows so happy? Well, we like to think the whisky distillery on the island has a little something to do with it. Tobermory Distillery and the cows at the creamery have a bit of a partnership - to reduce waste, the distillery sends its spent barley from the malt rooms over to the farm, where the cows eat it as part of their diet.⁠

Some cheese fans say that they detect a ‘boozy’ note in the cheese - we certainly recommend pairing it with a slightly peaty single malt. The smoky notes of the whisky complement the tart apple and cocoa notes of the⁠
cheese - cozy up with a glass and a slice for the perfect winter’s evening!⁠

UPDATE! Our walk up counter is now closed for the holidays! While we had hoped to keep our walk up counter open for business all the way until Christmas Eve – we have had to change our plans once again and close up shop so that we can make sure you get what you've ordered. Our holiday hours will remain the same, however we will only be accepting customers who are picking up pre-orders. We're so SO thankful for your support and understanding and we hope you have a wonderful holiday season, however that looks this year.
